The twists and turns of life

I was born with the name Marissa but I've been known in the past to go by "Mari" or "Rissa".  Most recently, "Mommy" was added to the list of alternative names I'll be answering to.

Though this blog was created for the purpose of a classroom assignment, I see no reason not to take advantage of the platform and take the time to occasionally post about my personal thoughts and aspirations, whether in regards to work, school, or my home life.  With the impending personal changes my life is about to take, I imagine I'll have lots of "twists and turns" to talk about -- metaphorically and literally.

I was born and raised in Southern California, a place I still love to return to and visit at least a few times a year.  I moved to Texas in 2006, then to Houston in 2007 and have remained here since.  After I got a job working for a local charter school I began seriously thinking about where I wanted my life to go, academically and career-wise.  I'm a huge nerd when it come to science, specifically astronomy and theoretical physics, so I began to wonder if a lifetime following either of those subjects was the right path for me.  Once it became clear that I would be committing to becoming either a researcher or a teacher, I felt the strongest pull toward becoming a teacher -- particularly at the high school level, where my own memories of my education are fond and had a huge impact in creating the person I am today.

I enrolled at HCC in 2010, thinking of a possible double major in Math and Physics, when I had the proverbial "light bulb moment" following a conversation with a coworker in our school's human resources department.  Rather than tackle a teaching career in HS science, which would require me to also be certified in fields which I have less interest in, I decided to stick exclusively with my love for mathematics.  Thus began my intensive journey toward obtaining my bachelor's degree in math, which I am now continuing to pursue at the University of Houston-Victoria while I juggle my full time job, husband, and the impending arrival of our first child next month.  (See image below.)

In addition to my avid interest in math and science, I'm also a nerd when it comes to computers, consoles, and gaming in general.  I've been using a computer for the better part of 25 years, and two years ago finally built my own lavish, high performing machine that has more RAM than is strictly necessary and more available space than I'll probably ever know how to fill.  The graphics card is already outdated, despite the fancy price tag it had at the time, but it still runs like a dream and has memory cores to spare for the day when software makers realize that no one has less than 6 cores in their computer anymore.  I'm holding out on upgrading to Windows 8, because I don't see the necessity in changing away from an OS that actually works, and I enjoy having my games and MS applications run the way they should.  I don't have need for much else besides my "beast", but I have the obligatory iPad, Android smartphone, and Kindle devices in my collection, which basically rounds out most of the popular OS's currently available.

A shot of my hometown: beautiful Lake Forest, California.

From me and the squirt in my belly, happy blog reading!
